Dialogue with Dave

Today’s blog is preparation for your rough draft. Using your imagination to picture ‘Dave’, he is the reader you imagine when you picture the reader of your essay. He’s a pretty nice guy, and smart, too. But first off, like any reader, he wants to know why he should care about the subject your writing.

For todays exercise in class, we had to pair up with a partner to practice dialogue as seen in the example of Dave above.

Ben Noel and I had a conversation about my research paper, he asked me the following questions:

Question: Why? Where? Who? When? What?

Answer: Sport is important in many individuals’ lives but some Christians believe that you can’t play sport and be a Christians. Where as I completely disagree with those views, sport is a great way to worship Christ.

Question: What do you mean by worshiping Christ through sport?

Answer: In anything we do in life, we need to put Christ at the center, as long as we don’t put our sport first (allow it to be a hindrance to our relationship with Christ) but merely play to give God the glory.

Question: How do most people see this? How do you see it differently?

Answers: Most Christians see other Christians who participate competitively in sport negatively, this is because sport is associated as an idol, where as I see it as a positive way to worship Christ and even as a ministry opportunity.

Question: Can you give me an example?

Answer: There is a famous soccer player from Brazil named Kaka. After he won the UEFA Champions League, which is the biggest club competition in the world and the 4th biggest sporting event in the world, he took off his shirt, fell to his knees and prayed in front of everyone. On his vest it said the words, “ I belong to Jesus”

Question: Did that surprise you?

Answer: Yes because it took great courage in order to bodily proclaim his faith in front of the entire world.

Question: What other questions does this raise?

Answer: How can we glorify God through our conduct on the field?

Question: What should we do about this?

Answer: We should look to the Bible and try to the best of our ability to display the teachings of Christ and a behavior that would bring glory to his name.

Question: what do you think we should do about it?

Answer: In schools we could educate our youth about the importance of sporting behaviors both on and off the field, teaching them important life lessons in the process

This exercise was extremely helpful to me, it helped identify where I was going with my research paper, which areas I was lacking and unclear in, as well as the areas in my paper that were strong and directed. I hope this exercise provides insight on your research paper as well as reveals further direction in your writing.

Love, Serve, Repeat.
